Rural fibre coverage in Spain: real 2026 status
Spain leads Europe in rural fibre
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, by end-2025 95% of the Spanish population has access to fibre at 100 Mbps or more. Spain outperforms France, Italy and the UK in rural penetration.
The Plan UNICO de Banda Ancha has funded rollout to villages under 2,500 inhabitants since 2021. Result: today you can live in an 800-person village in Asturias and have 600 Mbps symmetric.
How to check if your village has fibre
Step 1: visit banda-ancha.gob.es (official MITECO map). Enter your municipality and you'll see deployed tech: FTTH fibre, vDSL, fixed 4G or 5G.
Step 2: try vamosmobil.es/cobertura — we check in real time whether active fibre exists for your street/door. More accurate than the national map, which shows availability per municipality but not per address.
Step 3: if neither shows coverage, contact the town hall — many small villages are in the waiting list with estimated 2026 or 2027 dates.
What speed to expect in rural areas
If you have FTTH (fibre to your home): same speeds as city. 300, 600 or 1,000 Mbps symmetric — no difference.
If you have vDSL2 (copper from a fibre node): up to 100 Mbps real if you're under 1 km from the node. Further away = degradation.
If only fixed 4G/5G is available: typically 50-200 Mbps, but varies by hour. VAMOS doesn't sell fixed 4G/5G yet — only real fibre.
Carriers with strong rural footprint
Movistar and MasOrange have the widest village networks. Vodafone is noticeably narrower. VAMOS rides these networks via NEBA wholesale, reaching any village where Movistar or MasOrange already have FTTH.
In villages of <500 people, the only FTTH carrier is sometimes a local cooperative (Adamo, Avatel, Yoigo Hogar). Check case by case.
VAMOS Fibra Rural: if fibre is active in your village, we offer the same speeds at the same prices as in the city. No rural surcharges.
Tips for remote workers moving to the countryside
1. Before signing the rental, check door by door at cobertura.vamosmobil.es. Difference between two streets in the same village can be symmetric fibre vs 4G only.
2. If the house doesn't have active fibre but the village does, order a new install. The carrier delivers in 5-10 working days, no extra fee.
3. Always keep a plan B: VAMOS eSIM Premium 80 GB with unlimited hotspot. If fibre drops on a key Zoom day, switch to phone without stress.
