eSIM vs physical SIM in 2026: which is better?
The quiet shift already happened
In 2026, 70% of new smartphones sold in Spain support eSIM. US-sold iPhone 14+ are eSIM-ONLY (no tray). Europe is still dual, but the trend is clear: the physical SIM will disappear within 2-4 years.
Movistar and Vodafone now feature eSIM front-and-centre on their website (physical option hidden on first screen). VAMOS was eSIM-first from day one.
Pros of eSIM
Instant activation: 3 minutes from purchase to working line. No couriers, no shops.
Multiple lines on a single device: up to 8 stored eSIMs, 2 active. Personal + work + travel on the same iPhone.
Carrier switch without hardware fiddling: port your number in 1 day without removing SIMs or trays.
More resilient: no SIM slot that gets dusty, no pin that can get lost when changing phone.
Better for travellers: buy a local eSIM of your destination before boarding, activate the moment you land.
Cons (yes, there are some)
Phone-switch is more complex: moving the eSIM to a new device requires reactivation with the carrier (not just transferring the card). VAMOS does this for free via chat in 2 minutes, but some operators charge €10-30.
If you lose your iPhone, the eSIM goes with it. A physical nano-SIM you can pop into a borrowed phone while waiting for replacement. With eSIM you have to request carrier reactivation.
Some Asian countries don't support eSIM yet (mainland China, parts of India). If you travel there often, keep a physical slot as backup.
Compatibility: which phone do you have?
iPhone XS and later → eSIM ✓
Google Pixel 3 and later → eSIM ✓
Samsung Galaxy S20 and later → eSIM ✓ (check model: some European S21 lack it)
Other Android: check Settings → Connections → SIM Manager. If you see an Add eSIM option, you're compatible.
Pre-2019 phones, BLU, Wiko, Ulefone, etc.: physical SIM only. Order nano-SIM in those cases.
VAMOS: eSIM or nano-SIM, your choice
Although we lead with eSIM for speed and convenience, we also ship physical nano-SIM by post at no extra cost. Arrives 24-48h on the Peninsula, 3-5 days for Balearics and Canary Islands.
For most users eSIM is the better experience. Only pick nano-SIM if your phone is old or you need detachable hardware.
