EU roaming 2026: what's actually included and what isn't

Roam Like At Home, in a nutshell

Since June 2017 the EU bans operators from charging surcharges for using your domestic plan in another European country. The regulation was renewed in 2022 and stays until 2032 unchanged.

Calls, SMS and data cost you the same in France, Italy or Greece as they do at home in Spain — provided you respect the fair-use anti-abuse limit.

Which countries qualify (and which don't)

27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway (European Economic Area). 30 countries total where your VAMOS eSIM works like at home.

NOT included: UK (post-Brexit), Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, Vatican, Turkey, Morocco. For these you need an international-roaming add-on or a local eSIM.

Special case Gibraltar: technically counts as EU-roaming. Your Spanish eSIM keeps working after crossing the gate from La Línea.

Fair use: when you'll be charged extra

The EU allows operators to cap roaming usage if they detect abuse (e.g. someone buys a Spanish eSIM only to use it permanently in Germany). Two thresholds: 4 months outside your home country, or more roaming data than domestic.

VAMOS applies the following fair use: up to 25 GB/month in EU roaming for plans of 30 GB+. Past that — you get a notification and possibly a €0.019/MB extra. Transparent and visible in-app before you cross.

For normal tourism or remote work (1-2 weeks/month abroad in another EU country) you'll NEVER hit this cap.

Comparison: VAMOS vs Movistar vs Orange in roaming

VAMOS: EU roaming included on ALL plans from €6.95/mo. Same 5G/4G speeds. No hidden fees.

Movistar: EU roaming included only on mid/premium plans (from €25/mo). Their basic Fusión Inicia has roaming capped at 5 GB/mo EU.

Orange: EU roaming on Love plans. The economy Sí Love only 3 GB/mo in EU. Extra data at €0.07/MB.

Pro tips for nomads and frequent travellers

Always enable Data Roaming BEFORE travelling (Settings → Cellular → Data Roaming ON). Some eSIMs disable it by default — you'll land without data.

Going abroad EU for more than a month: pick up a local prepaid eSIM. Keep VAMOS as your Spanish number for bank SMS but burn data on the local eSIM (cheaper long-haul).

Enable real usage tracking in your VAMOS account — you'll see how much roaming you consumed during the current month.
